Montenegro has three submarine tunnels – Rose, Rakite and Spilice – which in recent years have become an increasingly popular tourist attraction. These tunnels were built during wartime and were used as secret military shelters. They were designed to protect vessels from enemy surveillance, especially from air attacks. Smaller warships, such as gunboats, missile boats, and torpedo boats, could be hidden inside to ensure greater safety during potential attacks.
The underground military tunnels in the Bay of Kotor were constructed in the 1970s as part of a secret shelter system for naval vessels. “Spilice” and “Rakite” extend about one hundred meters inland, are approximately ten meters wide, and the sea depth inside them ranges from about three and a half to over five meters. The largest of them is the tunnel near Rose, which stands out not only for its size but also for having a separate entrance for cargo vehicles.
Stunning landscapes and crystal-clear water
An unforgettable adventure experience
A perfect contrast between military architecture and the natural surroundings
In addition to offering a fascinating insight into military history, these tunnels are also an ideal place for swimming, diving, or exploring. If you are planning a boat trip from Kotor, visiting the submarine tunnels is definitely something you should not miss.
